A
medical expert has revealed that the effects of smoking cigarette on men’s
penises include shrinkage and erectile dysfunction. Based on his clinical
experience of over 17 years, Marc Laniado, who is a Harley Street Urologist,
explained: “I see erectile dysfunction a great deal.”
Laniado’s warning comes
as part of Vice’s Change Incorporated mission to get people in the United
Kingdom (UK) to quit smoking cigarettes for good. Penis shrinkage is a decrease
in penis size. Sometimes, the shrinkage is permanent, and other times, it is
the result of a treatable condition or due to lifestyle habits. Penis size
varies amongst men, and in some cases, considerably.
A
study shows that neither race nor ethnicity has anything to do with penis size.
While many men may think they have above average size penises, most fall into
the range experts consider normal size. However, the comment of the urologist
underscores the impact of smoking on the male reproductive organ. Laniado has
been a consultant since 2002 in full time clinic practice specialising in the
diagnosis and treatment of men with prostate cancer and Benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BPH). Speaking further on the damage cigarettes wreak on the
penis, he said:
“To
have a firm erection, you need sufficient blood flow.” On the contrary, Laniado
explained that smokers have a higher incidence of artherosclerosis in all blood
vessels, including those in the penis, which can reduce blood flow. “The
chemicals in smoke may also have an effect on firmness; nicotine causes blood
vessels to become narrow. This can be temporary or – eventually – permanent,”
reported the ‘Mirror’.
Worryingly,
Laniado similarly noted that smoking cigarettes could also cause the penis to
shrink over time. Citing the examples of the ordeals of some smokers who experienced
shrunk penises, he explained: “Often they will say ‘my erection is not so good;
I don’t wake up with an erection in the morning as much as I used to or my
penis isn’t quite so hard when I’m having sexual relations’.
“But
also sometimes, people say that their penis is getting shorter as they get
older, as smoking stops the blood flowing through the penis, which stops the
spontaneous and nightly erections that are needed to stretch the penis and keep
it at a good length.
“So,
in summary, smoking can make your penis appear shorter or in fact become
shorter.” According to him, female smokers, too are not spared from the
negative impact of smoking cigarette. Laniado added that smoking could also
affect the sex lives of women. He added: “Women’s arousal is – if you think
about it – also affected by blood flow to the area.” Previous research showed
that smoking cigarette is also associated with erectile dysfunction (ED). This
according to a 2017 study reported in the BJU International.
